Your Guide to FAFSA

Navigating Student Aid

This guide provides a foundational overview of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

1. What is FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines a student's eligibility for several types of aid:

2. When do I apply?

Applications typically open on October 1. However, due to updates, the 2024–2025 cycle opened in December 2023.

3. How to Apply: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Create FSA ID

Go to studentaid.gov/fsa-id. Both student and one parent (if dependent) need IDs. Takes ~10 minutes.

Step 2: Start Application

Log in at studentaid.gov and select the correct academic year.

Step 3: Fill Sections

Complete student and parent sections. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to import tax info quickly.

Important Tips:

  • List Colleges: You can add up to 20. Add at least one even if you haven't applied yet.
  • Sign & Submit: Both student and parent must sign with their FSA IDs. Save your confirmation page.
  • Special Circumstances: If your family has experienced financial changes (job loss, medical expenses), contact the college for an appeal.
